Three more suspects have been arrested in a case related to the failed assassination attempt on Pakistan’s ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan during his party’s rally last year. The police gave this information on Monday.
“Two PML-N workers – Mudassar Nazir and Ahsan Ali – have been arrested from Gujranwala division for their social media posts,” the police said.
Another suspect, Tayyab Butt, has been taken into custody on charges of helping prime suspect Mohammad Naveed in obtaining the weapon used in the attack, he said.
Mr Khan, chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, was shot in the right leg on November 3 when gunmen opened fire on others standing on a container-mounted truck in the Wazirabad area (about 150-km away) , where he was leading a long march to press for midterm elections.
Police had earlier arrested the prime suspect, Muhammad Naveed, who opened fire on Khan along with his cousin Waqas. Naved is on judicial remand while Waqas is in JIT custody on physical remand.
The three newly arrested suspects were produced before an anti-terrorism court which remanded them in the custody of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) for three days’ physical remand.
Imran Khan recently alleged that members of the JIT were being pressurized to absolve themselves from the findings of the murder conspiracy probe against him. Khan reiterated, “Powerful people were behind the assassination attempt on me.”
His party has claimed that ‘three shooters’ were sent to kill Imran Khan.
It said police have arrested a shooter and are on the lookout for “two others”.
According to the forensic laboratory, Khan was hit by three bullets from Naveed’s gun.
Mr Khan, 70, had blamed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and ISI Major General Faisal Naseer for plotting his assassination.
The Punjab Police had registered an FIR regarding the attempted murder on Khan, but did not mention ‘high profile suspects including top ISI man Khan held responsible for the attack’.
Imran Khan had dismissed the FIR saying it was just a “piece of garbage” without naming Sharif, Sanaullah and Faisal.
