Police have seized a country boat with 550 liters of petrol and arrested a person in this connection for trying to smuggle the fuel into Sri Lanka.
Following a tip-off, a special police team was deployed in different parts of Terespuram on Friday. When police spotted two men loading plastic containers into a boat, they managed to detain Jayakumar, 33, of Terracepuram, while his accomplice fled.
The police also seized eleven 50-litre plastic cans of petrol loaded in the boat, and took the fuel and Jayakumar to the Thoothukudi North police station for questioning. After recording his statement, the seized boat along with Jayakumar and petrol was handed over to the customs officials.
