Pune: Near a part of Kunal Icon Road Planet Millennium Society The rock caved in at Pimple Saudagar around 7 am on Thursday.
There is no information about any casualty. Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMCThe authorities attributed the collapse to the ongoing excavation work for an under-construction building and have barricaded the collapsed portion. The road is being repaired, said an official.
Preeti Iyer, a resident of the area, said, “The incident happened in the morning and immediately messages started circulating on our society’s WhatsApp groups asking us to avoid the area. A possible tragedy was averted as the incident happened before school-times “
Shatrughan Kate, a former corporator of the area, said he received a call about the incident at around 7 am. Kate said, “We immediately reached the spot and called the police and PCMC officials. The administration’s response was quick. Even before the barricades came up, people had started diverting vehicles. The builder had excavated up to 10 meters near the road for the upcoming building. Probably due to heavy rains, the road on its side collapsed. About 30% of the road has collapsed. In a 1.5 km area, there are about 9000 flats.”
City engineer (civil) Makrand Nikam said they are probing the accident and inspecting whether there was any lapse on the part of the builder. Nikam said, “Once we got a call, we cordoned off the area and started repair work. Hopefully by tomorrow the stretch of road will be usable. Prima facie it seems that the builder had done piling work, but it was a bit weak at one point, due to which the road collapsed.”
“A water supply line was damaged due to the incident. There was no supply through it at that time. We have repaired it,” said Shrikant Sawhney, joint city engineer, PCMC’s water supply department.
