In the backdrop of BJP’s prediction that her government would collapse in the next five months, Banerjee on Wednesday asked the saffron party to “swirl a glass” before making such an attempt with the TMC government.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed that the BJP was trembling with fear after 26 non-BJP parties at a conference in Bengaluru on Tuesday announced an alliance called “India”.

In the backdrop of BJP’s prediction that her government would collapse in the next five months, Banerjee on Wednesday asked the saffron party to “swirl a glass” before making such an attempt with the TMC government.

“The only work of the BJP is to create unrest, violence and divide people on the basis of religion. They will get a conclusive answer. People will take revenge by voting against them (BJP). India will face a fight,” Banerjee, who is also the Trinamool Congress supremo, told reporters here.

Setting the tone for their 2024 Lok Sabha campaign, 26 non-BJP parties on Tuesday formed an alliance – the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) – to take on the ruling NDA unitedly.

He said, “Ask them (BJP) to overturn a glass and then try to topple our government. He should have realized that his government at the Center will fall soon. Since yesterday (when India was formed), the BJP camp is trembling with fear,” he said.

BJP MP Shantanu Thakur had said on Sunday that the TMC government would not last more than five months.

Banerjee also criticized the BJP’s Wednesday rally against the violence during the panchayat polls.

Banerjee had claimed on 14 July that 19 people, mostly from her TMC, had been killed in poll-related violence since the election date was announced on 8 June. However, police sources put the death toll at 37.

“I will tell you that most of the people who have been killed in these incidents of violence are from our party. I have come here to see those who were injured mainly in the incidents of clashes in Nandigram and Khejuri. The violence perpetrated by the BJP across the state is condemnable, he said at SSKM Hospital here.

Banerjee announced that the state government was providing Rs 2 lakh and jobs to the next of kin of each person killed in the violence and Rs 50,000 to the injured.

Some of the victims undergoing treatment at the hospital received checks from Banerjee during her visit to the hospital.
