As voting for the Karnataka Assembly elections ended on Wednesday evening, former chief minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader BS Yediyurappa said the saffron party would “get an absolute majority” and form the government.

The veteran leader also said that people are happy with his decision not to contest this year’s elections.

Talking about the Lingayat community, which constitutes about 17 per cent of the state’s population and has been a strong poll issue this year, he said the community is “very happy” with the BJP.

Voting for the Karnataka Assembly elections ended at 6 pm on Wednesday, with 65.69 per cent polling recorded an hour earlier.

As per the latest polling percentage for the election to the 224-member assembly, Ramnagar saw the highest turnout of 78.22 per cent.

On the other hand, the lowest turnout was recorded in Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) south limits (parts of Bengaluru city) at 48.63 per cent, election officials said.

Veterans like Union minister Nirmala Sitharaman, former chief minister BS Yediyurappa, Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy, his wife Sudha Murthy and ‘Rajamate’ Pramoda Devi Wadiyar from the Mysuru royal family were among the early voters who cast their ballots.

The polling process began at 7 am amid tight security and went on till 6 pm. The counting of ballots will take place on May 13. A significant number of 2,615 candidates actively participated in the election race.
