Guwahati: The Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) has rejected the claim of two professional cyber experts. Bongaigaon District smart electricity meters can be hacked by saying “meters are foolproof”.
professional cyber specialist Ron Das And Aditya Singh Recently claimed that a research done by them has revealed that smart meters are not secure as anyone can easily hack them, which can pose a serious threat to the security of the company as well as the country .
Ronnie, who claimed to be a senior security advisor with National Bank of Dubai, alleged that a hacker could easily enter APDCL’s servers and misuse consumer data. He even claimed that due to the miscreants, there could be power failure in the entire state.
However, a senior official of APDCL has dismissed these claims as baseless.
“Conversion of post-paid electricity meters to pre-paid smart meters is underway under the Revised Distribution Sector Scheme of the Central Government across the country. About 14 lakh smart meters have been installed in Bihar while about 20 lakh meters have been installed in Bihar. Uttar Pradesh,
Work is going on in other states including Gujarat. How can there be a technical glitch or a bug? Why did the government approve the scheme if it can be easily hacked?” the officer asked.
The official said that APDCL may file an FIR against the youth for conspiring to obstruct the conversion of smart meters by misleading people. He said that a security audit is conducted every year in APDCL and there is no possibility of the system being hacked.
Ronnie and his friend did the research in April and brought the findings to the notice of APDCL. On April 21, an IT team from APDCL went to Bongaigaon and recorded Ronnie’s side.
