Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan has said that diversification of services is imperative for the survival of some legacy enterprises to avoid obsolescence due to technology-driven changes.

Addressing an orientation workshop for artisans/exporters on exports and the Post Office Export Center initiative to enhance global exports under the aegis of the Department of Posts, Ms. Sundararajan said that many traditionally popular service models are vulnerable to technology-driven disruptions. Reasons are losing their relevance.

According to the Lt Governor, the Modi government was engaged in efforts to revive enterprises such as railways, post and radio with a large number of dedicated employees, with a focus on serving rural areas. He said the postal department is among those that have been identified for change.

He pointed out that the post office depended heavily on people willing to exchange information with each other. But due to technological development, gradually people gave up the habit of writing letters. There has also been a decrease in the demand for postal services. “Also, it is important to provide employment to the large number of employees employed in postal services,” Ms. Soundararajan said.

The Lt Governor cited the example of one of the oldest post offices in Tamil Nadu at Kodambakkam in Chennai. When the post office was about to close due to falling demand, he joined forces with the local community to oppose the closure proposal.

Now many savings schemes like ‘Dhan Bachat Yojana’ have been started to help the people. Due to this, the postal department is now working for the betterment and help of the people.

J. Charukesi, Chief Post Master General, TN Circle, G. Natarajan, Post Master General, Chennai and other officers participated.
