DMK plans year-long programs to mark Kalaignar’s centenary

The Puducherry DMK has proposed to start work on the Kalaignar Arivalayam in the city this year during the birth centenary celebrations of DMK patriarch and former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi starting June 3.

The proposal to start work on the project at a land site owned by the party during the DMK chief’s birth centenary year was moved by Leader of the Opposition R.K. A resolution was passed through in an executive meeting convened by Siva.

A public meeting is also planned in June or July with the participation of Tamil Nadu Youth Welfare Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin.

State Council President SP Shivakumar, MLA V. Anibal Kennedy, R. Senthil Kumar and L. Sampath and party office bearers attended the meeting.

The meeting also decided to organize a series of programs till June 3, 2024. Installation of statues of the leader, renovation of party flagpoles, seminars and public meetings at several places, in compliance with government regulations, to highlight Karunanidhi’s contribution. Social justice and public welfare and the essence of the Dravidian movement are part of the agenda of the programme.

On June 3, DMK party units and feeder organizations will pay homage to Karunanidhi’s portrait. Along with leaders of the Secular Progressive Alliance, DMK leaders from here are also scheduled to participate in the centenary rally in North Chennai. The Puducherry leader will also attend the inauguration ceremony of Kalaignar Kottam, a memorial at Kattoor, the birthplace of the late party patriarch at Tiruvarur, on June 20.
