Three members of a family were crushed to death by a herd of elephants in Jharkhand’s Latehar district. A three-year-old girl is also included in the dead. The incident took place on Thursday late night at around 1.30 am. Panu Bhuiyan was sleeping with his 26-year-old wife and three-year-old daughter in a hut near a brick kiln in Malhan panchayat, about 80 km from Ranchi.
Inspector Amit Kumar of Chandwa police station said that a group of elephants attacked the brick kiln area. Other laborers in the area managed to escape, but the Bhuinya family was trampled to death by the group. The bodies of the three family members were brought to the police station on Friday morning and sent to Latehar Hospital for post-mortem.
Latehar’s Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Roshan Kumar said that about 14 elephants have been moving between Balumath and Chandwa forest range for the past several days. The laborers were sleeping late in the night, due to which they could not find the group of elephants. The DFO said that those killed in the incident belonged to Garhwa district. A relative of his family has been given Rs 60,000 as immediate relief.
