Karnataka DGP Praveen Sood was appointed as the new director of the CBI a day after the results of the Karnataka assembly elections were out. Today he will assume his office. Sood, a 1986 batch IPS officer, will hold the post for two years. He is retiring in May 2024, but with this appointment, his tenure has been extended till May 2025. The tenure of the current CBI director Subodh Kumar Jaiswal is ending today.

Before the Karnataka assembly elections, on March 14, Congress state president DK Shivakumar called him worthless. Shivakumar had said that our DGP is not fit for this post. He has been DGP for three years, but works like a BJP worker. There should be an FIR against him.

Sood has not filed a single case against BJP leaders: Shivakumar
Shivakumar had alleged that Sood registered 25 cases against Congress workers, but not a single case against BJP leaders. We have also complained to the Election Commission. He had demanded the arrest of Praveen Sood. Shivakumar had said that if the Congress government is formed after the elections, strict action will be taken against Sood.

PM Modi and CJI stamped
On the evening of May 13, there was a meeting between PM Modi, Chief Justice of India DVE Chandrachud and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary. According to news agency sources, three IPS officers were selected for the post of CBI director in the meeting. PM Modi and CJI DVE Chandrachud approved the name of Praveen Sood. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary had objection to the name of Sood.

Praveen Sood is a resident of Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. His father Om Prakash Sood was a clerk in the Delhi government, while mother Kamlesh Sood was a government school teacher in Delhi. Sood did his schooling from a government school in Delhi. After this he did B Tech in Electrical Engineering from IIT Delhi.

He became IPS in 1986 at the age of 22. He got Karnataka cadre. While in service, he completed MBA in Public Police Management from IIM Bangalore. In the initial phase of police service, he was SP in Bellary and Raichur. Apart from this, he was also DCP in Bangalore and Mysuru.

Sood has received gold medal from CM in 1996. Apart from this, the Police Medal in 2002 and the Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2011 were given by the President. In June 2020, Praveen Sood was made the DGP of Karnataka.

Praveen Sood’s wife Vinita Sood is a social entrepreneur. Have two daughters. One daughter Ashita Sood is a post graduate in law. Ashita got engaged to cricketer Mayank Agarwal in 2018 and got married in 2022. Mayank Agarwal is a resident of Bangalore. He plays for Karnataka in domestic cricket. In the current IPL season, he is playing with the Sunrisers Hyderabad team. Mayank has scored 1488 runs in 21 Test matches and 86 runs in five ODIs for Team India.

Selection Process of CBI Director
For the selection of the CBI Director, the name is finalized in the meeting of the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. After this, the Department of Personnel and Training (DOPT) issues orders after receiving instructions from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

On May 13, there was a meeting of the selection committee at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s house. It was attended by CJI DY Chandrachud, and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary. After this three names were shortlisted. Apart from Sood, the names of Madhya Pradesh DGP Sudhir Saxena and senior IPS Taj Haasan were included in this. Eventually the name of Sood was agreed upon.
