Karnataka Elections: After casting vote, Sudha Murthy said, “Look at us. We are old but….”

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India]May 10 (ANI): Author-philanthropist Sudha Murthy on Wednesday cast her vote at a polling booth in Bengaluru’s Jayanagar in the Karnataka Assembly elections which began at 7 am today.

Along with her husband and Infosys founder Narayana Murthy, she encouraged voters to come out and vote.

Speaking to ANI, Sudha Murthy said, “I always tell them (youth) to come and vote and then you have the power to speak, without voting you have no power to speak.”

“Please look at us. We are old but we wake up at 6, come here and vote. Please learn from us. Voting is a sacred part of democracy.”

After casting her vote, her husband Narayana Murthy said, ‘It is the responsibility of the elders to sit with the youth and advise them why voting is necessary. That’s what my parents did.

Urging people to exercise their franchise, Narayana Murthy said that people do not have the right to “criticize” the regime if they do not vote.

Speaking to reporters, he said, “First we vote and then we can say it is good, it is not good but if we don’t do that then we don’t have the right to criticize.” Murthy said he had returned from abroad this morning and had reached to cast his vote.

Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani also cast his vote at a polling booth in Koramangala, Bengaluru today.

Voting for the Karnataka Assembly elections began at 7 am today amid tight security.

The three major political parties in the state – the BJP, the Congress and the Janata Dal-Secular (JDS) – have tried to woo voters, making promises and leveling allegations against each other, to secure a majority in the state’s 224-seat assembly.

These assembly elections, which are a crucial test for the ruling BJP, which is hoping to beat precedent and return to power, as well as for the Congress looking for an electoral resurgence.

Polling is being held for 224 assembly seats in Karnataka, in which 2,615 candidates are in the fray.

The fate of the candidates will be known on May 13, the day of counting of votes. Polling is scheduled at 58,545 polling stations including auxiliary polling stations. (ANI)
