You have often spoken about the pressures you face being Mithun Chakraborty’s son. How much did your father support you?
He has always supported. They have made it very clear to me that getting into this industry has been my choice. I chose to be an actor. Neither he nor my mother ever forced me to enter this industry. So the good and the bad and the ugly, I’ve had to deal with it myself. I have had to try and learn from failures and I have had to be humble about success. My father has always been a very important guide in my life and I learn from his actions every day.
My father has often said to me, ‘You know, I will never help you because you are my son. Being my son doesn’t get you a free ticket to do anything. You have to make yourself worthy of it. You must be worth the audience’s love, time and money. That is your doing. You do bad, they won’t like you. You do well, they’re going to like you. Its as simple as that.’ This is what he advised me and I am very happy that he never helped me in anything. My upcoming film, ‘Jogira, Sa Ra Ra’, my Telugu film ‘Roosh’, my second Hindi film which is coming soon – all these have come to me on my own merit. I am very proud of him and it is all because of my father’s teachings.

Contrary to popular beliefs about star kids finding work, you recently struggled through a rough patch where you had no work.
Look, the thing is, I’m living proof and example of nepotism not available. If it had worked, I would have been doing every fourth or fifth film there. But no, it is not. I’m still struggling like anyone else and I’m very proud to say that. When I didn’t get the job, it was because I didn’t get selected in the audition. There is nothing wrong in this. As an actor, you have to face the fact that you will get rejected and you shouldn’t take it personally. You’re doing your best, aren’t you? I have gone to every audition, be it for television, be it for films, be it for web shows, I have done it all. But like I said, I got these three projects because of those auditions. I am very proud of the work that I have got because of my qualification.
I feel I should tell this to all the actors who believe that nepotism exists. No, the only thing a film industry family can do is that I can meet a director only if he is free. I can visit a producer only if he/she is free. And that was only once. That’s it. I can just go over and introduce myself. This is the only advantage I have. Otherwise, getting work, getting a film, it all depends on destiny. So I am very proud of all the auditions I have given. And I’m still auditioning because I’m an actor. And this is what is necessary for me.

your little brother Namashi Chakraborty He is also all set to become an actor. Is there any advice you gave him?
To be honest, I could not give any tips to Namashi as he is such a good actor. In fact, when I saw ‘Bad Boy’, the only thing I said to him is that the only compliment I can give you is that this is not your first film. It doesn’t sound like your first film at all. When I compared ‘Bad Boy’ to ‘Jimmy’ (Mahakshay’s debut film), I was a rock in comparison. Be it comedy, action, romance or emotion, he is a fine actor. that is very good. He is very fluid in all his forms and the way he has molded himself into this character. I am so proud of him. And like I said, it doesn’t look like his first film.
Do you have fond memories of visiting your father’s film sets when you were young?
Well, I have been to the sets of most of my father’s films. I mean, not all because he has done more than 300-400 films. But whenever I’ve gone, it’s always been a great experience because since childhood I’ve been exposed to cameras and lights and antics. So I have always had an opinion on how films are being made and what is the magic in them. No special memories but I can tell you this much that I loved the food on the sets. Whenever papa used to shoot in Chennai or Hyderabad and I used to accompany him, we used to get gunpowder chutney. I used to have it with rice and ghee as I am a big foodie.

Most people in the film industry would agree that Mithun Chakraborty is an institution. What is your biggest learning from him?
To be a good, righteous and honest person is the biggest lesson from Papa. If you say something, commit it. Don’t be a jerk. Even today people in the industry say that the check may bounce but Mithun Da’s words will never change. It’s something I really need to learn and I’m trying to get to grips with. I think this is a very difficult thing to do. Because in today’s world everyone just keeps making false promises. And here’s a guy who really means what he says. I think that’s the one thing I really want to learn from him. And I guess I’m kind of out there.
Your mother Yogita Bali was also a famous actress in her time. However, she rarely appears in public now.
My mother is a complete house bird. She just loves us – her husband, her four kids, her daughter-in-law and her pets. Our dogs are our four-legged siblings. She really likes to be at home. There are times when we all have to request him to take us out to lunch. She rarely agrees to it. Mother is like this only. And of course, mom decided that she wanted to be a mother and a family woman. After marriage, he left all the limelight. He’s very chill about it. She loves her place. And I think it suits him. She also thinks it suits her. But I believe somewhere in my heart that I really want to share screen space with him someday. you never know. Maybe it will come true.

Your sister Dishani is quite popular on social media. Does he have plans to venture into films as well?
Yes, my sister Disha definitely has plans to enter films. Right now she is living in Los Angeles. She wants to establish her base there and then she wants to find work there. I think it is a very good decision. She knows exactly what she wants and she is going after it, with gusto. I just met my younger brother Remo, who is living in Los Angeles. I was with him in April. And it was really great to spend time with him.
We all know Mithun Chakraborty as an actor. How is he as a father at home with his wife and kids?
Whenever he is at home, he is either watering his plants or keeping track of how the plants are shaping up. Papa also loves to cook. He will always cook lunch or dinner, no matter how cold it is, no matter how hot it is. He just likes to cook. He loves to cook for us. He always keeps asking us what we want to eat. He always has ideas to try some new dishes. So father is like this at home. He is very cold-blooded and loves his plants and food.

How would you describe a typical day in the Chakraborty family when you are all together and have the day off?
A typical day at home shows Mom with the dogs and Dad in the kitchen cooking. I can be found in my gaming room as I love playing my games. that’s what I do. When the wife (actress Madalsa Sharma) is at home, we probably watch a horror film or a web show. We watch these funny YouTube videos and scary videos. And when Namashi is also at home it will either be in Soho where he is a member or his friends will come over and we all have a nice get-together. That is. My younger brother Remo and my sister Disha live in LA, so we definitely miss them, especially on occasions like Diwali and Holi, but otherwise it’s just a day at Chakraborty’s house.
What can fans expect from you this year?
I am very excited about my upcoming film ‘Jogira Sa Ra Ra’. It is due out on May 12. Then my Telugu film is coming. I really hope people see my work and appreciate it. There is more work to do as I have so much energy that I want to show in my performances. This is going to happen soon. I’m really upset about it.
