Guwahati: A tribal woman was forced to give birth on a boat in Majuli, the world’s largest river island where lack of health care for marginalized people has been a major issue for years.

Her relatives say that the child died soon after birth due to lack of post-delivery care. The incident happened a few days ago but went viral on social media in the last 24 hours.
The incident happened when the woman was pregnant. boonti doliThe 20-year-old was being brought to the Majuli district hospital from Sanong village, which is separated from the mainland of Majuli by the Khersuti river.

The woman’s husband said, “We need a bridge till Majuli district headquarters so that such incidents do not happen in future. If the bridge is not built over the Khersuti river, more such tragedies will be repeated.” Krishna Doli,
Sanong Village, which was under Luhit Khablu Gram Panchayat Lakhimpur District, was brought under Majuli district by the state government a few months ago. Although the local people were expecting better services after joining Majuli as the district headquarters was closer to them, the villagers lamented that the health care was still in a shambles.
“The child was born in the middle of the Khersuti river. The ASHA worker was there but could not help much. It was raining heavily and the pregnant woman could not be brought in a motorcycle. We brought her to the river bank on a tractor and then in a country boat. Without any river ambulance, it was a harrowing journey,” he said. Devanand DoleHe is a resident of the village.
The child and the mother were somehow brought to the district hospital in Majuli by the villagers. But he said that the doctors in Majuli referred the mother again to a hospital in the nearby Jorhat district.
