Mangaluru: The Mangaluru South police have arrested four people for the murder of a 45-year-old man, whose body was found at Nehru Maidan on Tuesday.
City Police Commissioner Kuldeep Kumar R Jain said the accused have been identified as Prashant (40), GK Ravikumar alias Nandish alias Nandi (38), Vijay Coutinha (28) and Sharath V (36).
According to the police, the deceased Janardan Pujari was sleeping in the public gallery built at the football ground at Nehru Maidan.
The accused searched his pocket and allegedly tried to steal his mobile phone. However, he immediately woke up and the four accused demanded his mobile phone. When he refused to hand over the phone, they stamped his chest and he fell from a height of about six feet.
The accused further went to the place where she fell and assaulted her.
Commissioner Jain said that the four accused fled from the spot after snatching his mobile phone.
Based on the complaint of the victim’s brother, a case has been registered under sections 302, 397 and 34 of the IPC. The accused were arrested near Muthappa Gudi near Central Railway Station and the stolen mobile phone was recovered.
The commissioner said that those arrested have criminal background. Among those arrested, GK Ravikumar was involved in a murder case lodged at Kushalnagar police station in 2009, Sharath was involved in a house burglary case lodged at Vittal police station in 2007.
