Misinformation a threat to democracy, US official tells Urdu journalists

David Moyer, Public Affairs Officer, US Consulate General-Hyderabad, said it is imperative for citizens to be aware of the misinformation ecosystem and counter it through truthful information.

Addressing a training workshop on ‘Combating Disinformation for Urdu Journalists’ organized by the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, MANUU, in collaboration with the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Osmania University, and the US Consulate General-Hyderabad, he said that there was a need for public To change the nature of discourse in the media for positive and factual information on relevant issues.

MANUU Vice Chancellor Syed Ainul Hasan urged media persons to work towards building trust by strengthening digital media literacy and empowering individuals to identify, critically analyze and counter misinformation. He said that Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first education minister of independent India and Maulvi Muhammad Baqir, the first martyr of the Indian journalist community, used journalism as a weapon during the freedom struggle.

DIG (Women’s Safety) B. Sumathi said propaganda should not become an excuse to intimidate and harass critical voices, defame opponents or obstruct legitimate human rights activities. Stevenson Kohir, OU head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, outlined the various themes of the training sessions. A booklet titled ‘Standard Operating Tools’ for Urdu journalists was also released.
