In Odisha, a Muslim woman was cyber cheated of Rs 1.5 lakh. Enraged by this, her husband gave her ‘triple talaq’ over the phone itself. Following which, the woman lodged a complaint against her husband at the Kendrapara police station on Friday.

The woman’s name is Jamroon Biwi and she is 32 years old. They have been married for 15 years and have three children. Her husband Sheikh Rajid works in Gujarat.

The woman said in the complaint that she had befriended an unknown person on Facebook last month. The man promised the woman a gift of Rs 25 lakh. In return, asked the woman for Rs 1.50 lakh in the name of service charge. The woman came to his words and gave the money. Later on not getting the gift, the woman realized that she had been cheated.

Husband gave triple talaq in anger
On the other hand, when the woman’s husband came to know about this, he got angry. On April 1, he pronounced talaq thrice to the woman over the phone and divorced her. Later, the woman tried to talk to the husband several times but he did not respond. After which he lodged a complaint at the police station.

Husband can be punished for three years
A case has been registered against the husband under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act. This act prohibits triple talaq and under this the culprit can be punished for up to 3 years. Sections of the Dowry Act have also been invoked against the husband.

In 2017, the Supreme Court banned triple talaq, saying it was against the basic tenets of the Quran and violates Islamic Shariat law.
