Netflix removes basic ad-free plan in US and UK

Video streaming platform Netflix said on Wednesday it has removed its basic plan in the US and UK, in which users could watch shows and movies without commercial ads, as the company tries to attract more customers to its ad-supported tier.

Netflix said on its website that the $9.99 per month Basic plan will no longer be available to new or rejoining members.

Users who are already on a plan can stay on it until they change plans or cancel their account.

According to the company’s website, the cheapest ad-free plan now costs $15.49 a month (£10.99) in the US. The Standard plan costs $6.99 (£4.99) monthly with advertising and the Premium plan, which allows more users and offers ultra-high definition, is $19.99 (£15.99).

The company launched a $7 per month option with ads in 12 markets, including the US, last November as an alternative to ad-free plans. It was designed to attract more customers and add a new revenue stream as competition for online audiences intensified.

Netflix also cracked down on password sharing across households in May and forced users sharing accounts outside the same household to pay additional fees, resulting in a large number of users signing up for its cheaper ad-tier base.

In May, the company said that the ad-supported tier had reached about 5 million active users per month, emphasizing the breadth of its programming for potential advertisers. The company is scheduled to report its second-quarter results after the markets today where investors will assess the risks from the ongoing strike in Hollywood.
