Netflix, which began as a DVD rental service, will be shutting down its core business later this year after 25 years. Final discs will be shipped September 29 from DVD.com.
“After an incredible 25 years of running, we have decided to shut down DVD.com at the end of this year,” Netflix said in a blog post.
Netflix said it aims to provide the best service possible for its members. However, with the business continuing to shrink, the streaming company said it has become increasingly challenging to maintain the level of service previously provided.
What first started as a video library in 1997, selling and renting DVDs, Netflix pivoted in 2027 into on-demand video streaming. Then, the company tried to differentiate its DVD rentals. quikster in 2011, but he failed. Netflix transferred them to DVD.com in 2016. However, by then, the company had focused on producing original shows and had done away with mailing DVDs on Saturdays.
Netflix’s first DVD to be shipped out was Beetle JuiceWhich was sent in 1998. Since then, the company has mailed more than 5.2 billion movies in iconic red envelopes to more than 40 million customers, though it shut down in 2019.
