Principal Secretary, Public Works Department B Chandra Mohan and Collector MS Sangeetha on Wednesday inspected the ongoing construction work of permanent gallery being set up for organizing Jallikattu near Alanganallur.

Construction of a grand arena with state-of-the-art facilities to host Jallikattu, the traditional bull-taming sport, is underway at Keelakarai near Alanganallur in the foothills of Vaithumalai.

According to a press release of the district administration, the Jallikattu arena with world-class facilities is being set up in an area of ​​16 acres at a cost of 44 crores. Out of 68 acres of government land in Keelakarai, a total of 16 acres has been identified for the Akhara. The venue will also be used to host other sporting events.

Construction of a stadium to the extent of 77,683 square feet was also underway as part of the project. The project includes designated space for the main sports arena, Vadivasal, administrative offices, bull handlers and medical tests for bulls and a health centre.

The project will also include a registration center for bulls, changing rooms for bull handlers, clock room, museum, space for temporary sales counters, galleries and hostels.

The playing field will have storm water drainage, fountains, artificial turf and an overhead water tank with a capacity of 50,000 litres.

After reviewing the construction works, the officials asked to expedite the project while ensuring the quality of the work.
