Samajwadi Party workers in Varanasi celebrated the 50th birthday of their chief Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday by cutting a tomato-shaped cake and distributing tomatoes among people to underline its rising prices.
A party worker who organized the celebration said they could have distributed sweets but “sweets have also become expensive”.
“We always celebrate our leader’s birthday with pomp. But, this time inflation is at an all-time high. We could have distributed sweets but even sweets have become expensive. The cost of tomato is Rs 120 per kg. In our villages, we eat chapatti with tomato chutney, but that too is being snatched from our plate,” he told PTI.
“So, we are distributing tomatoes and also cutting a tomato-like cake,” he said.
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati wished Yadav on his birthday.
“Heartiest birthday wishes to the National President of Samajwadi Party Shri Akhilesh Yadav ji. May Lord Ram give you good health,” Adityanath said in a tweet in Hindi.
Mayawati wished Yadav good health and long life.
Akhilesh Yadav, a four-time Lok Sabha MP, is currently the Leader of the Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly.
He was the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh from 2012 to 2017 and a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council (one term) from 2012 to 2018.
