Rejecting the bail plea of social activist Teesta Setalvad, the Gujarat High Court has asked her to surrender immediately. Gujarat police had arrested last year
Setalvad was arrested by the Gujarat Police on June 25, 2022 on an FIR lodged by the Ahmedabad Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) for allegedly hatching a conspiracy to falsely implicate innocent people in connection with the 2002 Gujarat riots. He was kept in police remand for seven days and was sent to judicial custody on July 2. Later the Supreme Court granted him bail.

His arrest along with Teesta Setalvad’s co-accused former IPS RB Sreekumar came just a day after the Supreme Court on June 24 dismissed the petition of Zakia Jafri, wife of slain Congress MP Ahsan Jafri, against the Special Investigation Team (SIT). At the same time, the then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was given a clean chit on the charges of conspiracy in the riots.
