The water level of Krishna and its tributaries continued to rise on Wednesday due to heavy rains in Maharashtra, Belagavi and Bagalkot.
To alert the backwaters of flooding, Irrigation Department officials started releasing 1.25 lakh cusecs of water from Almatti dam in Bagalkot district. For the first time this season, more than 1.04 lakh cusecs of water is flowing.
Officials said though there was minimal release from dams in Maharashtra, the water in the river was more than 1.2 lakh cusecs, due to rain in the former catchment and catchment areas.
The water level at Almatti on Wednesday was 517 metres, just two meters below the entire reservoir level of 519 metres. However, the storage was 88.503 tmcft, which was 71.94% of the maximum storage of 123.01 tmcft.
The inflow into the Renuka Sagar Dam on the Malaprabha River was 8,400 cusecs, but the outflow remained at 194 cusecs as it was only 16.3 tmcft as against 37.3 tmcft.
Raja Lakhmagouda reservoir at Ghatprabha in Hidkal had an outflow of 19,693 cusecs and 114 cusecs. The water level is 17 tmcft against a gross capacity of 19 tmcft. The outflow into Dhoopdal Wear was 8,593 cusecs while at 10,193 . had arrived
Live storage at Koyna Dam in Maharashtra was only 36 per cent of the total storage. Irrigation officials said the outflow was zero despite an inflow of 40,000 cusecs.
Nine bridge-cum-barrages were submerged in Nippani, Athani and Gokak in Belagavi district. But the villagers were using alternative routes.
DC Nitesh Patil, CEO HV Darshan and SP Sanjeev Patil visited the flood affected areas of the district on Wednesday.
