Tim Cook committed to doubling job creation in India

New Delhi: Apple Inc. plans to double the number of jobs created in India, building on the 100,000 generated through manufacturing and other work in the past two years as it pledges its commitment to Asia’s third-largest economy in discussions with government officials has strengthened, said a person of conscious dialogue.

During a meeting with senior government officials on Wednesday, Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook discussed the company’s business plans in India, sought policy forecasting, help in developing a supplier and component ecosystem, and manpower training, per requested anonymity.

“More than 100,000 jobs have been created in India. It will double soon. This is going to be a long term drama. Apple is happy with the support given by the government. They have accepted the role of the government,” the person said.

As part of efforts to diversify its supply chain and reduce its dependence on China, Apple has moved production of iPhones and other products to other countries such as India and Vietnam. The move comes amid geopolitical tensions in China and rising labor costs. By diversifying, Apple can ensure a steady supply of its products to world markets.

Cook met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Telecom and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav and Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar.

Apple is also exploring options to expand its manufacturing base in India and bring in other product lines under the Make in India initiative, the person said earlier. The government has offered to support Apple’s manpower training needs by using the Gati Shakti University model to impart skills through Apple’s own courses and training programmes.

The person said the government has ready-made models to demonstrate on the lines of existing training courses run by Boeing and Siemens.

Cook on Tuesday inaugurated India’s first Apple-owned store in Mumbai. They are expected to launch the second such store in Delhi on Thursday.
