Washington: Federal judge overseeing former President Donald Trumpsued for his mishandling of the classified document case set test date As per the court order on Friday, for May 20.
The criminal prosecution of Trump comes less than six months before the November 2024 US presidential election, according to the ruling by US District Judge Eileen Cannon, who sits in Fort Pierce, Florida. Trump is currently the frontrunner in the race for the Republican nomination.
In a hearing on Tuesday, federal prosecutors working for US special counsel Jack Smith asked Cannon to set the hearing for December, while Trump’s lawyers said there was no need to set a date yet.
The trial was initially set for 14 August – a date that both the defense and prosecution opposed as they said they needed more time to prepare.
