Washington:
The United States announced a new $1.3 billion military aid package for Ukraine on Wednesday, including air defense systems, anti-tank missiles, drones and other equipment.
In a statement, the Defense Department said the package is “part of US efforts to meet critical needs of Ukraine as well as meet critical near-term capabilities by building the sustainable capability of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.”
The aid will not reach the battlefield immediately, as it is covered under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, under which Washington buys equipment from the defense industry or partners, rather than taking it from US stocks.
The package includes four NASAM air defense systems and related munitions, TOW anti-tank missiles, 152 mm artillery shells, drones as well as counter-drone systems and various vehicles.
The United States has ramped up international support for Ukraine, immediately forming an international coalition to support Kiev after Russia’s invasion and coordinating aid from dozens of countries.
