Nagaland’s first woman Rajya Sabha MP S Phangnon Konyak (right) and nominated Rajya Sabha MP PT Usha (left) have been included in the panel.

The Vice President and Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha Jagdeep Dhankhar on Thursday formed the panel of Vice-Chairpersons of Rajya Sabha. For the first time, half the members of the panel are women. 4 women MPs in the 8 member panel – Pt. Usha, BJP MP S Phangnon Konyak, NCP MP Fauzia Khan and BJD MP Sulata Dev have been replaced.

This is the first term of these four women MPs in the Rajya Sabha. Phangnon Konyak is the first woman to be elected to the Rajya Sabha from Nagaland.

All four male members are from different parties
This panel of new Vice-Chairperson has come into force from 17th July. The panel includes YSR Congress’s V Vijayasai Reddy, BJP’s Ghanshyam Tiwari, TMC’s Sukhendu Shekhar Rai and Congress’s L. Hanumanthaiya has also got a place.

In the absence of the Speaker, the Vice-Chairperson runs the House.
As per Rajya Sabha rules, the Chairman has to nominate MPs to the panel. In the absence of the Speaker or the Deputy Speaker, one of these Vice-Chairpersons can run the House. The Vice President of the country is the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

Rajya Sabha completely digital
Rajya Sabha has gone completely digital from Thursday. Deputy Speaker Jagdeep Dhankhar will use the tablet for all work. Information about the proceedings of the House will also be kept on the tablet only.
