An airline spokesperson had said that All Nippon Airways would honor the discounted tickets.

All Nippon Airways mistakenly sold hundreds of tickets at heavily discounted prices due to a currency conversion mistake. According to a Bloomberg report, passengers were able to book first class tickets from Jakarta to the Caribbean islands for as low as $890 (roughly Rs. 73,000). These tickets will usually cost around 20 times as much.

According to reports, people were able to get business class tickets for as little as $300 (roughly Rs. 25,000). Many customers paid only a few hundred dollars for the tickets instead of the normal price of $10,000 (roughly Rs. 8.21 lakhs). All Nippon Airways did not disclose how many customers bought the discounted tickets.

An airline spokesperson had said that All Nippon Airways would honor the discounted tickets. Later, the carrier said that a final decision is yet to be taken. According to reports, a decision may be taken by the end of this month. All Nippon Airways clarified that the discounted tickets would be valid for passengers who fly before the decision is finalized.

ANA Holdings said it was an error on its Vietnam website that caused the currency conversion error. The Economic Times reported that the airline is “probing the cause of the bug and the extent of the damage”.

This is not the first time that an airline has gone awry and offered business class tickets at a huge discount.

In 2019, Cathay Pacific mistakenly sold first- and business-class tickets on the Vietnam-US route for $675 (Rs 55,000) instead of the usual $16,000 (Rs 1.31 lakh).

In a surprising move, it decided to honor those discounted rates. “Happy 2019, and to those who bought our nice – very nice New Year’s Day surprise ‘special’, yes – we made a mistake but we look forward to welcoming you on board with issuing your tickets. Hope That it will make your 2019 even more ‘special’!” The carrier said.

Singapore Airlines made a similar mistake in 2014 and sold tickets at less than half the price. It later decided to honor the deal, told the BBC. In 2015, United Airlines suffered a ticketing scandal on its transatlantic route. Due to an error by the “third-party software provider”, tickets were sold for less than $100. The carrier later canceled the tickets.
