Google has confirmed long-standing reports that it will launch its first foldable phone, the Pixel Fold, during the upcoming Google I/O 2023 event.
While no official specifications have been released, a teaser video shows the phone with a full-sized external display that is similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold devices.
The back of the phone has a camera bar that looks similar to other Pixel devices, but is less prominent.
US tech publication The Verge, citing a CNBC report, said that the Pixel Fold will turn from a 5.8-inch phone into a 7.6-inch tablet, be powered by the Google Tensor G2 processor, weigh 10 ounces, and have “the most… durable hinge”. A foldable.”
However, it is expected to be priced above USD 1,700, similar to Samsung’s Z Fold 4 that launched at USD 1,799.
According to Engadget, the Pixel Fold is expected to deliver up to 24 hours of battery life under normal usage and up to 72 hours of battery life when Extreme Battery Saver mode is used.
The much-anticipated phone was expected to launch in 2022, but it didn’t make the cut for I/O that year.
Still, reports surrounding the phone’s launch persist, and Google is busy teaching Android developers how to design apps for the foldable device and larger screen.
These efforts may pay off with the launch of the Pixel Fold and the new Pixel tablet next week.
The Google Store has a page where interested parties can sign up for more information following the official launch on May 10th.
