France Protests: Nahel’s family has not released his surname.
Paris/New Delhi:
France has been rocked by nights of protests after a teenager was captured on video being shot at close range during a traffic stop.
-
Nahel, a 17-year-old teenager, was shot and killed Tuesday morning during a traffic stop in the Paris suburb of Nanterre. The incident has revived long-standing complaints about policing and racial profiling in France’s low-income and multi-ethnic suburbs.
-
Video of Nahel’s encounter with police has sparked protests after it contradicted the official version of eyewitnesses and security camera videos.
-
Officials said a voluntary manslaughter investigation would be conducted against the officer who fired at Nehal as a preliminary investigation concluded that “the conditions for legal use of the weapon were not met.” However, the accused officer claims that he fired his gun out of fear that the boy would run over someone with the car.
-
The teen’s family has not released his surname. Nahel worked as a takeaway delivery driver. For the last three years, he was an active member of the Pirates of Nanterre rugby club.
-
Nahel was an only child raised by his mother Mounia. He alleged that his son was murdered because he had an “Arab face”. He told the media, “The officer saw an Arab face, a small child, and wanted to kill him.”
