16th Edition of Coimbatore Vizha: Health, Entertainment, and Education | Coimbatore News – Times of India

Coimbatore: The 16th edition of Coimbatore Vizha kick-started on Tuesday with ‘Healthy Kovai’, an event focusing on health. The week-long vizha would feature various entertainment and educational programmes.
The first event of the first day delved into unhealthy lifestyles, which cause common diseases such as diabetes, heart attack, stroke and cancer.Private hospitals in the city have come together to organize health camps at various government offices in the city. With a focus on oncology, cardiology, gastroenterology, dental and eye care, each day a camp would be held at a select government office.
City police commissioner V Balakrishnan inaugurated the first camp at the commissionerate in the presence of Coimbatore Vizha chair Rahul Kamath and Young Indians Coimbatore chair Ashwin Manoharan.
This year, the vizha would showcase the majesty of the iconic Tamil Nadu Agricultural University’s building, where the light and sound show would be held at 6.30pm and 9.30pm till Monday.
The building boasts of a grand Indo-Saracenic architecture design and is made of red table-moulded brick in mortar and finely dressed cut-stones. The Madras high court building, Mysuru palace and even the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai follow this classical design.
The foundation for the building was laid on September 24, 1906, by Sir Arthur Lawley, governor of Fort St George, Madras. It was inaugurated on July 14, 1909. This 100-plus-year-old building has stood the test of time.
The day, meanwhile, featured events like one-day collector, cyclothon, isai mazhai and heritage walk.

Elephant found dead near Coimbatore
An elephant was found dead near Anna University’s regional campus in Marudhamalai beat in Coimbatore district. The male elephant, aged between 25 and 30 years, had injuries on its mouth, forehead, and abdomen after fighting with another tusker. Ganja seized from Coimbatore Central Prison inmate
Officials seized ganja from an inmate in the Coimbatore Central Prison on Thursday. Acting on a tip-off, a team led by jailor S Sivarasan conducted a search and recovered eight grams of ganja hidden in the rectum of convict prisoner K Jayaraman. Jayaraman revealed that he received the ganja from convict prisoner Parthasarathy, who in turn received it from chief warder Jayachandran. The information led to an inquiry by superintendent of prison Senthilkumar and a case was registered against Jayaraman under relevant sections.
