On May 28, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new building of Parliament. A total of 19 opposition parties have decided to boycott the programme. He gave this information in a joint statement. Rahul Gandhi and Mallakarjun Kharge have already demanded President Draupadi Murmu to inaugurate the programme.

The names of the 19 parties are as follows: Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Trinamool Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Janata Dal-United (JDU), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Samajwadi Party, Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena faction, Communist Party of India, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Karela Congress Mani, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Kutchi, Rashtriya Lok Dal, Marxist Communist Party, National Conference and Revolutionary Socialist Party among others Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) will not be a part of the event.

862 crores ready

The work of the new Parliament House built at a cost of Rs 862 crore has been completed. The Prime Minister laid its foundation stone on 10 December 2020. The construction of the new Parliament building started on 15 January 2021. This building was to be completed in November last year. This building built under the Central Vista Project is the dream project of the Prime Minister. It was built in 28 months.

4 storey building, not affected by earthquake
The old Parliament building is in 47 thousand 500 square meters, while the new building has been built in 64 thousand 500 square meters. That is, the new building is 17 thousand square meters bigger than the old one. The new parliament building is of 4 storeys. It has 3 doors, they are named Gyan Dwar, Shakti Dwar and Karma Dwar. There is a separate entry for MPs and VIPs. Earthquake will not affect it. Its design has been prepared by HCP Design, Planning and Management Private Limited. Its architect is Bimal Patel.

The specialty of the new parliament

  • At present, the Lok Sabha has a seating capacity of 590 people. The new Lok Sabha has 888 seats and the visitors’ gallery has seating for more than 336 people.
  • At present, the Rajya Sabha has a seating capacity of 280. There are 384 seats in the new Rajya Sabha and more than 336 people will be able to sit in the visitors gallery.
  • There will be so much space in the Lok Sabha that during the joint session of both the Houses, more than 1272 MPs will be able to sit together in the Lok Sabha itself.
  • There are separate offices for every important work of the Parliament. Hi-tech office facilities are also available for officers and employees.
  • The cafe and dining area are also hi-tech. Hi-tech equipments have been installed in different rooms of the committee meeting.
  • There are also common rooms, ladies lounge and VIP lounge.

Why the new building was built
The current Parliament House was built 96 years ago in 1927. In March 2020, the government told Parliament that the old building was overutilized and was deteriorating. Along with this, there is not enough space in the old building to accommodate the MPs who will increase after the new delimitation of Lok Sabha seats. For this reason a new building is being constructed.

Construction started in January 2021
The construction of the new triangular shaped Parliament building started on 15 January 2021. This building was to be completed in November last year. PM Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the new Parliament House on 10 December 2020. Then he had said that nothing can be more beautiful than the new building of Parliament, when India will celebrate 75 years of its independence.
