The interior ministry said the largest and deadliest fire ravaged parts of Bejia and Jijel in the Kabyle region east of Algiers and Bouira, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) southeast of Algiers.
The operation to contain the fire involved around 7,500 firefighters on the ground and 350 trucks as well as air support.
Algeria is no exception to wildfires in summer.
Last August, at least 37 people were killed in a wildfire near Algeria’s northern border with Tunisia.
A year ago, officials said dozens of people had died in the blaze – including soldiers called in to help fight the blaze in a mountainous Kabyle region surrounded by villages.
