3 killed, 9 injured in Nepal avalanche: report

Kathmandu:

At least three people were killed and nine others injured in an avalanche in Nepal’s Karnali province.

The Kathmandu Post reported that the incident took place on Saturday morning at Chiarkhu Pass in the province’s Mugu district.

Fourteen people from Patrasi municipality in the district had gone to Chiarkhu to collect yarshagumba (caterpillar fungus), officials said. Three of them died and nine others were slightly injured in the avalanche.

“A total of three people have died and nine others have been injured in the incident so far. A team of police personnel has gone to the spot,” the report said.

Hundreds of people have traveled to the highlands of Mugu district to collect the caterpillar fungus, although local authorities have not allowed pickers on the site before May 18.

The three persons who died in the avalanche are said to have gone to hilly areas (known locally as patans) using unofficial routes.
