- CBI director selection meeting update; Praveen Sood Sudhir Kumar Saxena Taj Hassan

Praveen Sood (DGP Karnataka), Sudhir Saxena (DGP Madhya Pradesh) and Taj Haasan are in the race to become the next CBI director.
Three senior IPS officers have been shortlisted for the selection of the new CBI director. A high level meeting was held in Delhi on Saturday. In which the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice of India and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha were included. This committee will select the new chief of the Central Bureau of Investigation.
According to reports, Praveen Sood (DGP Karnataka), Sudhir Saxena (DGP Madhya Pradesh) and Taj Haasan are now in the race to become the next CBI director. The two-year term of the current CBI director Subodh Kumar Jaiswal will end on May 25.
1986 batch IPS officer Praveen Sood at the forefront
Praveen Sood, a 1986 batch IPS officer of the state cadre, is the frontrunner for the post. Sood had hit headlines in March when Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar accused him of siding with the BJP government in the state. Shivakumar had also demanded the arrest of the state Director General of Police, claiming that he was registering cases against Congress leaders.
Tenure can be extended up to five years
The selection of the CBI director is done through a high level committee. It consists of the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice of India and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. It has a fixed tenure of two years, but can be extended up to five years.
The CBI chief is selected from among the senior most batch of IPS officers.
For this post, the names of the officers of the most senior IPS batch i.e. between 1984 and 1987 are considered. The selection panel selects the CBI director on the basis of seniority, integrity, experience of investigating anti-corruption cases.
CBI works under the central government
- CBI works directly under the Central Government, hence it is called the most powerful agency. Any state government can request the center to get a CBI inquiry done in any case, although the final decision in this is with the central government.
- The CBI can investigate a case registered by the State Police only when either it gets instructions from the Center or the Supreme Court, High Court asks it to do so. Even under the DSPE Act, the government can get the CBI probe done.
