50 Cows Get Reflective Stickers On Horns To Prevent Road Accidents | Noida News – Times of India

NOIDA: Over 50 cows in Noida have got yellow night glow tapes on their horns to prevent accidents during fog and at night. Volunteers said they are also using reflective organic paint in cases where cows don’t let them touch.
This drive was undertaken by a Greater Noida-based NGO on Tuesday as stray cattle create a huge traffic menace, especially when the visibility is low. This endangers the lives of both cows and motorists.
“The organic paint will last longer and solve problems faced by motorists. Mostly, we have seen these reflective tapes on roads and bicycles. But we came up with the idea to put these on cows so that road accidents during the night can be prevented and both cows and motorists can be saved,” said Kaveri Rana Bharadwaj from Sophie Memorial Animal Relief Trust (SMART).
On average, three to four accidents occur daily in Greater Noida. This year, the NGO has rescued 18 cows and calves from accidents.
“We started the drive ahead of winter as accidents increase during this time due to fog. But the drive will continue until we keep finding unmarked cows. Just a day before the drive was launched, a Creta crushed five cows. If this is not alarming, then what else can be?” added Bhardwaj.
Last year, a truck crushed about five to six cows in Noida.
Several domesticated cattle land on roads after they are abandoned, posing a threat to commuters. Though the government has opened cow shelters at various places, one can see these animals sitting on the main roads or crossing the roads.

Bribes & premiums, BMC’s cash cow, jack up home rates
Mumbai builders not only have to pay hefty premiums and development charges but also large bribes to procure building permissions. The bribe demands can be as high as Rs 1,200 per sq ft in the island city. The official premiums and cess collected from builders are a major source of revenue for the BMC. Despite offering a 50% discount on premium payments, the BMC still collected over Rs 13,500 crore in a 13-month period. The high premiums ultimately affect the flat-purchasers, who bear the costs.
