Ranchi: National As many as 4,55,983 disputes, including 57,913 cases pending in various courts in the state, were settled in the Lok Adalats (NLA) organized by the Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority (Jhalsa) on Saturday. Jhalsa officials said 3,98,070 pre-litigation cases were settled and an amount of Rs 384.89 crore was settled in proceedings. The cases were mostly related to compoundable offenses relating to banks, labour, land acquisition and Accident Claim.
In the NLA held at the Jharkhand High Court, 138 cases including 28 cases pending in the courts were disposed of. The amount of three crores was also fixed. Three benches headed by Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad, Justice Anuba Rawat Chowdhary and Justice Sanjay Kumar Dwivedi conducted the exercise.
Meanwhile, over 76,000 cases were settled in the NLA held at Ranchi court and an amount of Rs 64 crore was settled. Under the Jharkhand Victim Compensation Act, an amount of Rs 46 lakh and Rs 80 lakh was distributed among motor accident victims.
Notable among the settled cases is a provision of Rs five lakh to Kushagra Kamal, son of Payal Khatri, who was allegedly murdered for dowry. Khari married Ravindra Kumar in February 2007. However, the accused soon started harassing Khatri for Rs 1 lakh and a bike as dowry. The accused allegedly set Khatri on fire in January 2009, leading to his death.
