In a fresh attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Trinamool Congress has cautioned the central government against the Agneepath plan, pointing to the fact that former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated by an ex-service ex-serviceman Was.

The party claimed the killing underscored the potential pitfalls of the controversial defense recruitment programme.

The state BJP, however, dismissed the apprehension saying that no Indian ex-serviceman has been involved in any such incident. TMC mouthpiece ‘Jago Bangla’ (Wake Up, Bengal) said in an article on Saturday, “Abe’s death at the hands of a former soldier reaffirms people’s fears about the Agneepath scheme.”

“BJP is playing with fire in the name of Agneepath scheme. We have seen what happened in Japan. A former soldier killed the former prime minister,” TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said on Sunday. The BJP said such apprehensions were baseless.

“We have never heard of any such incident involving an ex-serviceman of our country. TMC is just trying to politicize the matter,” said state BJP spokesperson Samik Samik Bhattacharya.
