Kolkata: The residents of Kolkata were caught unaware by the heavy rains on Wednesday afternoon. Although it was localised, it caused water-logging in several areas for some time, affecting traffic movement.
The weather office said the afternoon thunderstorms were caused by localized clouds and for the time being, weathermen have ruled out widespread rain in the city.
Most of the thunderstorms that started around 1 pm were concentrated over central Kolkata, while parts of south Kolkata were either dry or received light rain. But the Meteorological Department has raised hopes rain in kolkata and in other parts of South Bengal from Friday.
“Since the clouds were locally formed, there was no widespread rain. This is also a sign of weak monsoon. But we are expecting rains to increase over Kolkata from July 14 as the monsoon trough, currently likely to move towards north Bengal It is South Bengal,” said GK Das, director (weather) of RMC.
Heavy rains in a short span of time led to water-logging in parts of north and central Kolkata. Some water-logging-prone areas, such as Mu-Katarambabu Street and Thanthania, were briefly inundated. “Heavy rains lashed some water-logged areas in the north and central parts. But the storm water receded soon as we started pumping at the Hrishikesh Park drainage pumping station,” said a KMC official.
Since the rains coincided with the timing of school holidays, traffic slowed down on Sarat Bose Road, Park Circus, AJC Bose Road, AJC Bose Road Flyover, Theater Road and Ballygunge Circular Road. Police said traffic flow from Ma to Sector V slowed down for 30 minutes after 2 pm due to water-logging on the Nikko Park side of the Chingrighata bridge. But it soon came to an end.
