AI will have 'bigger economic impact than pandemic', tech CEO warns

He believes that if robots become more capable than humans, democracy may be at risk.

As we’ve seen in recent months, the possibilities for AI are limitless, and this is only the beginning of discovery. However, as the development of AI accelerates, industry experts and leaders urge developers and users to be aware of the technology’s potential risks.

Recently, a British AI expert shared his predictions about the effects of AI on human society. talking to BBC, Imad Mostaq, founder of tech firm, Stability AI, warned that AI could become far more capable than us and eventually control humanity. He believes that if robots become more capable than humans, democracy may be at risk.

“My personal belief is that it will be like that movie with Scarlett Johansson and Joaquin Phoenix, humans are kinda boring and it’s ‘goodbye, you’re kind of boring’, but I could be wrong.

”It’s worth discussing in the public sphere, if we have agents more capable than us that we can’t control, that are going on the internet and are connected and they achieve that level of automation, what’s the point of this? What do you mean? The worst case scenario is it spreads and basically it controls humanity because you could have a million things replicate effectively, but we don’t know,” he said.

He added that governments will need to act and introduce policies to limit the power of AI, which he says could have a bigger impact than the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy.

Despite the risks, Mr Mostak said the potential benefits of AI for almost every part of our lives could be huge. He thinks that the jobs that will disappear will be replaced by better ones because machines will take over menial jobs, allowing us to focus on better things. He further added that “it is up to us to decide which direction this goes”.

Specifically, his company created Stable Diffusion, a tool that uses AI to generate images from simple text instructions by analyzing images found online.

Recently, a computer scientist often dubbed “The Godfather of Artificial Intelligence” Quit his job at Google to speak out about the dangers of technology. He said advances in the field posed a “profound risk to society and humanity”.

In March, tech billionaire Elon Musk and several experts called for a halt to development of AI systems to ensure they are safe. an open letter, signed by over 1,000 people Musk and Apple co-founders including Steve Wozniak were inspired by the release of GPT-4, a more powerful version of the technology used by ChatGPT.
