Fourteen civilians, including six daily wage laborers working in a coal mine, were shot dead in a series of firing by security forces in Mon district in December 2021, amid a nationwide anti-insurgency operation.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will reach Nagaland on Monday on a two-day visit.

BJP candidate from Mon Town seat Cheong Konyak told PTI that Shah would address a rally on Monday at around 3.30 pm.

“We are expecting a crowd of over 10,000,” he added.

Konyak said Shah would meet leaders of civil society organizations on Tuesday, but did not specify which groups he would meet.

Another BJP functionary said leaders of organizations demanding a ‘frontier Nagaland’ state are scheduled to meet Shah during his two-day visit.

“We look forward to discussing their demand for a separate state. But we don’t know any more details right now,” he said.

The Eastern Nagaland People’s Organization (ENPO), which is demanding a separate state of Frontier Nagaland comprising the six districts of Mon, Tuensang, Longleng, Kiphire, Shamator and Noklak, initially called for a boycott of the elections as their demand Wasn’t met up with.

He later withdrew the call following an appeal by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

In a statement, ENPO also urged all citizens to cooperate with the government for the elections and not create any law and order problems.

The ENPO region has 20 seats in the 60-member Nagaland Assembly.

Nagaland will go to polls on February 27, while the counting of votes will take place on March 2.
