Andhra Pradesh: Under construction bus stop collapses in Vizag | Visakhapatnam News – Times of India

VISAKHAPATNAM: A under construction bus stop partially collapsed near the GVMC office in Andhra Pradesh‘s Visakhapatnam on Sunday.
Opposition parties, including TDP, CPM, and Jana Sena, protested at the site and criticised the alleged poor structural practices on the part of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation.
CPM GVMC corporator Dr B Ganga Rao demanded an enquiry with floor leaders from all the political parties. “About Rs 50 lakh is spent on this bus bay. The GVMC has taken up works on 20 modern bus stops with Rs 4.62 crore. Development of a bus stop hardly costs Rs 5 lakh. But the GVMC awarded the contract without even seeking the approval of the council. Corruption and faulty design have only led to the collapse,” said Ganga Rao.
Jana Sena leader Gopi Krishna said that hundreds of students wait for the buses any time during the working days at the bus stops surrounding the RTC complex.
“If the same incident occurs on some other day, it may have serious consequences. A cursory look at these bus stops tells how poor the quality is. A common man can build a four-storied structure in 100 square yards of land with Rs 50 lakh. But the GVMC is building these bus stops with Rs 50 lakh in hardly one to two cents. This itself tells the whole story,” alleged Gopi Krishna.
