CM Siddaramaiah’s government had said last month that we are very clear on our stand, we will review all those bills, circulars passed by the previous government, which are against the economic policies.

The current Congress government in Karnataka has decided to repeal the anti-conversion law of the previous BJP government. The Siddaramaiah government will introduce a bill in this regard in the assembly session beginning July 3.

This information was given by Karnataka Law and Parliamentary Minister H K Patil after the cabinet meeting. Significantly, the Anti-Conversion Law was implemented by the BJP government in September 2022.

The anti-conversion law, which came into force from September 30, was passed in the assembly in December 2021, but was not introduced in the legislative council where the BJP lacked the necessary strength. In May 2022, an ordinance was issued to implement the anti-conversion law.

The Act, passed in the BJP government, had provisions to protect the right to freedom of religion and prohibit illegal conversion from one religion to another through misrepresentation, force, undue influence, coercion, inducement or any fraud.

Under this, there was a punishment of 3 to 5 years with a fine of 25 thousand. While the violation of the provisions related to minors, women, scheduled caste / scheduled tribe was punishable by 10 years of imprisonment and 50 thousand fine.

These changes were also decided in the cabinet meeting

  • The changes made in the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) Act will stand cancelled.
  • Supplementary books will be given for Kannada and Social Science.
  • Chapters on RSS leaders, Madhav Sadashiv Golwalkar Hegdewar and Vinayak Damodar Savarkar will be removed from school textbooks.
  • The chapter written by right-wing speaker Chakraborty Sulibele will also be removed.
  • It will be mandatory to read the Preamble of the Constitution in all schools and colleges, government, aided and private.
