Apple Watch’s Fall Detection feature has once again proven its effectiveness by playing an instrumental role in the saving of an 82-year-old individual who was struck by a car in the UK.
Apple introduced the Fall Detection feature for the Apple Watch in 2018, coinciding with the launch of the Apple Watch Series 4. Since its launch, this feature has consistently garnered attention for its life-saving capabilities.
Once again, the feature has proven its effectiveness by playing an instrumental role in the saving of an 82-year-old individual who was struck by a car in the UK. According to the Shropshire Star newspaper (via AppleInsider), the elderly man received an Apple Watch as a Christmas gift, and it proved instrumental in his life-saving ordeal.
The incident occurred on January 19, 2024, at a roundabout in Kidderminster, UK, where Tony Jauncey was crossing the road and was hit by a driver in the wrong lane. The impact resulted in a broken collarbone, cracked ribs, and bruising for the man. Immediately after the collision, his Apple Watch triggered an alert to emergency services.
Recalling the incident, Tony Jauncey stated, “I was walking back to my car which was parked in Aldi and was crossing the road when I felt a thud.” He continued, “The next thing I saw was the bumper of a car in front of me… I was lying in the road, I was not able to move.”
Jauncey recounted that his Apple Watch detected the fall and inquired whether he wanted to call emergency services. Despite having the option to cancel, he chose to leave the alert unchanged, allowing it to automatically dial the authorities.
