Assam, Meghalaya Villagers Clash With Bows & Arrows, Situation Tense | Guwahati News – Times of India

GUWAHATI: Day after Karbi villagers of Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district and Pnar villagers of Meghalaya’s West Jaintia district attacked each other using bows and arrows and catapults, the Assam-Meghalaya interstate border remained tense on Wednesday.
Videos of Tuesday’s clashes went viral on social media and showed hundreds of people from both sides fighting with each other with bows and arrows and catapults. On Wednesday morning, police from both states prevented the villagers from both sides from assembling near the site of the clash, preventing further escalation of tensions. Security sources said the said site between the Lapangap village in West Jaintia Hills district and the Tapat area under the Hamren subdivision of West Karbi Anglong district remained tense but police forces of both the states kept the situation under control.
Meghalaya cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh told the media that the matter has been taken up with the Assam government and discussion on the fresh border violence will be held soon.
Meanwhile, district officials from both Assam and Meghalaya said they are coordinating with each other to keep the situation under control.
Both the states are currently engaged in resolving the over half-a-century border row between them and out of the 12 areas of differences, the disputes have been resolved in six places. Last year, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Meghalaya counterpart, Conrad Sangma, signed an agreement to settle the issues in six of the 12 disputed locations. The border dispute between the two states dates back to January 21, 1972, when the Assam Reorganisation Act, 1971, separated Meghalaya from Assam.
According to a PTI report, Lapangap village elder (Waheh Shnong) Deimonmi Lyngdoh claimed that farmers tending to their paddy fields were attacked with catapults, bows and arrows by people from Assam who were hiding near the fields.
