Assembly election results give BJP hope in Odisha; BJD says Naveen Patnaik invincible | Bhubaneswar News – Times of India

BHUBANESWAR: The BJP state unit appeared upbeat over the election results in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh and asserted that the party would replicate the winning model in Odisha next year. The ruling BJD denied that the results could halt the ruling regional party’s winning streak for the sixth consecutive term.
“We are confident that BJP’s victory in the three states will be reflected in Odisha next year.People of our state will certainly go for a change and bless us in the 2024 elections,” BJP state president Manmohan Samal said even as the BJD said the results would have no bearing on its winning streak.
BJP’s national vice-president Baijayant Panda, too, exuded confidence on the party’s good show in Odisha. “The results in the three states proved once again that the people have tremendous faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. I am sure that the BJP in Odisha will benefit from the results,” Panda said.
Responding to BJP’s victory in the three states, senior BJD leader and former minister Prasanna Acharya said it would not impact the party in Odisha. “Though BJP and Congress are national parties, they cannot match us in many ways. BJP won many elections in different states in the past, but people in Odisha have continued to bless Naveen Patnaik for the BJD government’s pro-people and development agenda. People have faith in Naveen Patnaik’s leadership,” Acharya said.
Despite tasting defeat in three states, the Odisha Pradesh Congress members said they are enthused with the victory in Telangana. “We are not upset at all. We lost in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan because of anti-incumbency. The same anti-incumbency factor went against BRS in Telangana and made us victorious. We will upset the BJD in 2024,” Congress state president Sarat Pattanayak said.
It must be noted that BJD’s recent support for the Narendra Modi government on the Delhi services bill and the no-confidence motion, followed by praise from Union home minister Amit Shah for the Naveen Patnaik government, recently gave rise to talks of a possible pre-poll understanding between the estranged BJD and BJP, who had parted ways a month before the 2009 elections.
The BJP not only bettered its tally in Odisha assembly from 10 seats in 2014 to 23 in 2019, but also replaced Congress as the principal opposition in the house. The BJP won eight Lok Sabha seats in Odisha, up from just one in 2014.
Having won 16 assembly seats out of total 147 in 2014 to only 9 seats in 2019, the journey of the state Congress has been downwards since 2000. The Congress vote share in the 2019 assembly polls dropped to 16.12 % from 25.7 % in 2014. The party’s vote share in this Lok Sabha polls nosedived to 13.81% compared to 26.38 % in 2014.
