Singh – the only BSP MLA in the 403-member UP Legislative Assembly – said Shaista is still in the party and has not been expelled, adding that the party sympathizes with her and even wanted her to return. He should contest the mayoral election.

“We inducted Shaista Parveen into the party and not Ateeq Ahmed and we also wanted her to stand in the mayoral election. Till now neither the government nor the police has shown any such video which shows that Shaista Parveen has any connection with that incident. The day she joins, the BSP will not keep such a person in the party,” Singh was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

“No action has been taken against him by the party, he is still in the party,” he said.

Parveen had joined the BSP on 5 January in the presence of its senior leaders, and was reportedly being considered as the party’s mayoral candidate for Prayagraj.

However, after Shaista was named as the main accused in the murder of lawyer Umesh Pal, BSP supremo Mayawati said that the BSP would no longer give a mayoral ticket to Atiq’s wife, nor to any of his family members.

“As far as Shaista Parveen is concerned, I want to make it clear that the situation has changed as soon as the name of Atiq’s wife came to the fore and after she went underground according to media reports regarding Umesh Pal murder case, Mayawati had told reporters.

He had said, ‘In such a situation, our party will neither give mayor ticket to Atiq’s wife nor any member of his family.’

Urban local body elections will be held in the state on May 4 and 11.
