Attack of the wild gaur: Saseendran sees a bid to divert public anger against the government.

Forest Minister AK Saseendran on Saturday claimed that there was an attempt by some organizations to stoke anger against the state government in the wake of the death of three people in separate wild gaur attacks in Kottayam and Kollam districts.

Talking to reporters here, the minister said that despite all possible interventions by the government and the district administration, the protest by the local residents in both the districts went on for hours due to the involvement of such organisations.

“Though all major political parties and their leaders accepted the relief measures and actions proposed by the authorities, some were reluctant to cooperate with it. Their agenda was to find a solution besides pinning the blame on the government,” Mr. Saseendran said.

He pointed out that an attempt was also made to create controversy over the District Collector’s order to kill a bison causing trouble at Erumeli in Kottayam. He said that such efforts would only affect the confidence of those government officials who want to discharge their duties honestly.

Referring to the steps taken by the Forest Department to deal with similar incidents, the Minister said that two special Rapid Response Teams have been deployed at problem spots. He said installation of surveillance cameras at sensitive places would also be considered.
