A senior Trinamool Congress leader said the appointment of Supriyo as the national spokesperson is part of the party’s strategy to expand its base outside Bengal.
Sources in the Mamata Banerjee-led camp said TMC MLA Babul Supriyo has been appointed as the party’s national spokesperson. Former Union Minister Supriyo took to Twitter to thank the party supremo for giving him the new responsibility.
He tweeted, “My heartfelt thanks to Hon’ble Didi @MamataOfficial & @abhishekaitc for inducting me into the wonderful team of National Spokespersons of @AITCofficial. I will do my best to fulfill the responsibility entrusted to me.”

The TMC leader said, “He is a well-known face across the country both as a singer and a politician. So he can help us in putting our ideas and policies on the national platform.” Supriyo, a former BJP MP, was dropped from the Union ministry last year, following which he joined the TMC.
He gave up his Asansol Lok Sabha seat, which he had twice won on a BJP ticket. The singer-turned-politician was nominated by the ruling TMC for the Ballygunge assembly bypoll in April this year, and he managed to secure the seat by a comfortable margin.
