Olympic wrestler Bajrang Punia criticized the Delhi Police after registering an FIR against protesting wrestlers for marching towards the new Parliament building for a planned women’s ‘mahapanchayat’ on Sunday.

Altogether 700 people were detained across Delhi, including 109 at Jantar Mantar.

An FIR was registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against wrestlers Sakshi, Punia and Vinesh, who staged a protest in connection with Sunday’s incident.

However, all the women wrestlers and protesters who were detained on Sunday were later released.

Referring to MP Brij Bhushan Singh, Bajrang Punia told media persons that it was unfortunate that a person accused of sexual harassment attended the inauguration of the new Parliament House.

He told ANI, “Delhi Police took only a few hours to register an FIR against us, but it took them 7 days to register an FIR against Brij Bhushan Singh.”

When asked if the wrestlers would continue to protest at Jantar Mantar, Punia replied, “Going back home is not an option, I will meet the rest of the wrestlers and we will decide what to do next.”

The incident took place after wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia and several others were detained after a scuffle broke out between protesters and the Delhi Police after they broke through the security cordon in an attempt to march towards the new Parliament building Was.

Tension escalated at Jantar Mantar as some wrestlers attempted to break barricades, leading to a chaotic scene with pushing and shoving between protesters and the police.

After the incident, the wrestlers were quickly pushed into buses and taken to an undisclosed location.

Thereafter, the police proceeded to clear the picket site, removing cots, mattresses, cooler fans, tarpaulin covers, and other belongings belonging to the wrestlers.
