Belagavi Churches Decorated And Lit Up | Hubballi News – Times of India

Belagavi: Grand Christmas celebrations have begun in Belagavi from Sunday. The city has five churches, which have been built more than a hundred years ago. All the churches are decorated for celebrations on Monday.
Belagavi district has more than 100 churches. Because of Christmas, activities have been brisk in various churches for the past one week, including the churches which are considered the oldest monuments of Belagavi, like Saint Mary’s Church, Methodist Central Church, Fatima Cathedral Church, Saint Anthony Church, and Belagavi Church.
The entire Christian community is gearing up for Christmas celebrations. The celebrations are also being held at Christian education institutions and households. As part of the celebrations, children exchanged gifts. Also, the festival of lights known as U-Christmas was celebrated with great fanfare. The Christmas trees were decorated and the cribs were made at all the churches.
Joe Mathew, a resident of Shahu Nagar, said that Christmas is a great festival. “We have decorated Christmas trees and built cribs at churches and homes. Apart from the celebrations, we recite the Bible and pray collectively on the festival day. Several competitions have been arranged in the respective churches till December 31,” he said.
Thousands of Christians from Kerala, who have been settled in Belagavi are also engaged in the preparation for the festival, which is attracting attention.
The Belagavi market had a festive atmosphere on Sunday. Cake sales are booming at the famous bakeries, which have been situated in the camp area for more than 100 years. The people are also busy with purchasing clothes, decorative items and greeting cards.
Meanwhile, Bishop of Belagavi Diocese, Rev Derek Fernandes, who heads the five districts in North Karnataka has given a Christmas message: “Do good and put a smile on the faces of the underprivileged.”
Leaders from the Christian community said that preparations have been made to welcome the New Year in various churches and various programmes have been organised on the night of December 31. The religious programme will continue till the beginning of the New Year.
